Today, it is jointly established by the Shaanxi Provincial People’s Government and the Ministry of Education. It is recognized as a high-level university in Shaanxi Province and an important institution for admissions in the region.
In 1941, the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee decided to merge several institutions, including Northern Shaanxi Public School, China Women’s University, and Zedong Youth Cadre School, to form Yan’an University, with Wu Yuzhang serving as the president. Over time, other colleges and schools such as the Yan’an Lu Xun Academy of Arts and Letters, College of Natural Sciences, and School of Administration were integrated into the university. In 1947, Yan’an University expanded its influence by sending teachers and students to Northeast, North, and Northwest China. In 1958, the People’s Government of Shaanxi Province initiated the university’s rebuilding, and in 1998, Yan’an Medical College, Yan’an People’s Hospital, and Yan’an University merged to form the modern institution. It became a provincial key university in Shaanxi Province and, in 2005, was jointly established by the Shaanxi Provincial People’s Government and the Ministry of Education. By 2011, it was recognized as a high-level construction university in Shaanxi.
Currently, Yan’an University has 15,234 undergraduates, 1,892 graduate students, 1,527 faculty and staff members, and 922 full-time teachers. The university consists of 18 secondary departments, 1 independent college, and 10 affiliated hospitals. It offers 16 primary disciplines with Master’s degree authorization, 61 undergraduate majors, 6 provincial superior disciplines, and 2 provincial first-class disciplines. The university has implemented the “Four Projects and Two Plans” for undergraduate education, including 12 majors recognized as provincial “first-class majors.” It has launched 445 classroom teaching reform projects and 313 asset education programs, with students winning over 1,000 awards in competitions and more than 570 national and provincial venture projects. The one-time employment rate for undergraduates remains above 90%, the highest in the province.
Yan’an University is also a leading center for spreading the Yan’an spirit in the modern era. It integrates this spirit into its educational foundation, focusing on ideological and political education. The university is home to several national and provincial education bases, such as the National Ideological and Political Work Team Training Center and the National Youth Revolutionary Tradition Education Base. About City:
Yan’an is a city located in northern Shaanxi Province, north-central China, known for its historical significance as the wartime base of the Chinese Communists from the mid-1930s to 1949. Situated on the Loess Plateau, an area characterized by windblown loess soil deeply etched by gullies, the city lies on the south bank of the Yan River, within a basin surrounded by hills. It serves as a road junction in northeast Shaanxi and has long been a strategic location, sitting at the border between Shaanxi’s agriculturally viable region and the arid northern lands that blend into the Ordos Plateau.
The name Yan’an dates back to 607 CE when the Sui dynasty established a commandery there. The town played a crucial role as a frontier post under the Tang dynasty and was integral to the Song dynasty’s defense against the northern Xi Xia dynasty. It was also the site of a pivotal victory in 1221 when Mongol armies defeated the Jin dynasty forces. After the 15th century, however, the area’s importance waned, suffering from Muslim uprisings (1864–75), devastating droughts and famines in the 1870s, and further droughts in the 1920s and ’30s, all of which severely reduced the local population.
Today, Yan’an is a relatively small city. The original walled settlement was destroyed by Japanese bombing in 1938–39. The region is known for its soil erosion, but efforts to reclaim the land are ongoing as part of the broader Huang He (Yellow River) drainage development plan. The area has increasingly focused on livestock farming and is home to a long-established woolen textile industry.
During the Chinese Communist Party’s Long March (1934–35), the Communist forces, retreating from Jiangxi Soviet areas due to pressure from the Kuomintang, eventually made their way to Yan’an, where they established their headquarters during the Sino-Japanese War (1937–45) and the subsequent civil war that culminated in the Communist victory of 1949. Yan’an became a symbol of the heroic phase of the Communist revolution, where Mao Zedong’s leadership was solidified, and the Communists mastered guerrilla warfare and peasant-based reforms that eventually brought them to power.
Yan’an lies in a coal- and oil-rich plain, with oil discovered at Yanchang, about 22 miles (35 km) to the east, in the early 20th century. Although oil production in the area remained limited for much of the 20th century, it was further developed after 1949. Today, oil production, coal mining, cigarette manufacturing, and electricity generation are key industries contributing to the city’s economy.
