About City:

Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, is a major hub for finance, transportation, and communication in Western China. It is located on the fertile Chengdu Plain, home to Dujiangyan, one of China’s oldest and most successful irrigation systems, which is fed by the Min River. Chengdu is also renowned for its iconic giant pandas, which inhabit the nearby mountains, making the city one of the world’s fastest-growing tourist destinations.

Historically, Chengdu gained fame for its exquisite brocades and satins and was celebrated for its refined culture and opulence. It has maintained its status as a prominent city and key administrative center throughout history, serving as the provincial capital of Sichuan since 1368.

Chengdu is also a major industrial hub. During the 1950s, a large thermal power plant was constructed, along with two significant radio and electronics factories, established with the assistance of Soviet experts. Additionally, a precision-tool and measuring-instrument plant was built to support the southwestern region’s industrial needs.

As with many ancient cities, Chengdu faces the challenge of preserving its rich history while modernizing. Efforts are underway to raise public awareness of its declining traditions and the importance of safeguarding its cultural heritage amidst commercialization and urban development.
