About City:

Wuhu is a third-tier city in Anhui Province, situated on the southern bank of the Yangtze River. It is the second-largest prefecture city economy in the province, following Hefei, and is strategically located around 150 km southeast of Hefei, 100 km south of Nanjing (the capital of Jiangsu Province), and 350 km west of Shanghai. With a population of 3.6 million, Wuhu is the fifth-largest port on the Yangtze River for water transportation.

The city has a rich history dating back to at least 770 BCE and became an important strategic town during the Three Kingdoms period (220-280 AD). During the Ming dynasty (1368-1644), Wuhu developed into a major trade hub for rice, tea, and wheat. In the late 19th century, Wuhu, along with Wenzhou in Zhejiang Province, became a treaty port. St. Joseph’s Cathedral, a Roman Catholic church, dates back to this period.

Wuhu is home to over 47 ethnic minorities, with the largest being the Hui Muslim minority, followed by Yi, Tujia, Miao, Zhuang, and Manchu. The city is also known for its distinctive Yanjiang cuisine, which specializes in freshwater fish and poultry, using unique techniques such as chopping, shaping, and coloring. Yanjiang dishes are often characterized by sweet and smoky flavors.

In recent decades, Wuhu has seen rapid development as part of the Yangtze River Delta urban and business agglomeration, alongside cities like Nanjing and Hefei. The city opened the Wuhu Xuanzhou Airport in April 2021 and launched the Wuhu Rail Transit system with two lines late last year, improving connectivity with major cities such as Shanghai, Nanjing, and Hefei.
