About City:
Chongqing, one of the world’s largest cities with a population of over 30 million, is a vibrant and fast-growing metropolis. Few places, in China or elsewhere, can claim an annual GDP growth rate of at least 10 percent for more than a decade. To me, Chongqing feels like a small province with a central city housing more than 8 million people. The city’s economic boom began in earnest when it became a separate municipality from Sichuan province in 1997.
With a history spanning 3,000 years, Chongqing has been a key political, economic, and strategic center in western China. Nicknamed the “Mountain City” for its rugged landscape and steep gorges, it is also known as one of China’s four “furnaces” due to its hot and humid summers. The Yangtze River, which originates here, flows through the city and winds its way 1,600 kilometers to Shanghai on the eastern coast.
Chongqing is China’s largest automobile producer, with an annual output of over 3 million vehicles in 2016, as well as more than 8 million motorcycles. Remarkably, the city also produced 58 million laptops in 2016, making up one-third of the world’s production, and 280 million mobile phones, or 15 percent of China’s total production.
Today, Chongqing is an increasingly important trading and investment partner for Australia, while also becoming a rapidly growing source of tourists and international students. As Sichuan restaurants continue to pop up across Australia, it’s worth remembering that the city is the birthplace of the famous fiery dining experience – the Chongqing hotpot!
Climate
The average annual temperature in Chongqing is 18℃. January is the coldest month, at an average of 7℃; July and August is the hot season, normally between 27℃-38℃. Chongqing is a humid city. Summer and autumn are the rainy seasons. The annual rainfall is 1,000-1,100mm.
